The Grand Lodge’s mission extends beyond Armenia’s borders — serving as a guardian of traditional Masonic values and ensuring that these ideals continue to inspire members worldwide.

From Operative Masons to Speculative Masons

Freemasonry transitioned from operative (stone-working) to speculative (philosophical) in 1717 in London, influenced by Pastor James Anderson and Sir Isaac Newton, a renowned physicist and former head of the Royal Society.
This evolution marked the beginning of Speculative Masonry, a cornerstone of the Age of Enlightenment and the encyclopedic movement.

Through symbolic rituals and philosophical teachings, Masons preserved the traditions of temple building — enriching them with the hermetic wisdom of alchemy and chivalric ideals.

In Armenia, Freemasonry represents a multi-layered reality, blending ancient traditions with modern principles of fraternity, knowledge, and moral integrity.

Masonic Regularity, Recognition & Ancient Traditions

The Grand Lodge of Armenia is recognized as a regular Masonic body, faithfully adhering to the Ancient Landmarks, Rules, and Customs.
Its practices are aligned with the Basic Principles defined in 1929 by the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) and the standards of recognition upheld by American Grand Lodges.

These foundational elements are rooted in the Ancient Charges — historic Masonic manuscripts such as the Regius and Cooke Manuscripts (15th century England).

The Ancient Charges consist of two major sections:

  1. The Legendary History of the Craft – A symbolic narrative rich in allegory, reference, and hidden meaning that informs the rituals and philosophy of Masonry.

  2. The Code of Honor – A moral and organizational framework defining the qualifications of candidates, ethical conduct, assembly laws, and disciplinary principles.

The Principals of Freemasonry

  • Freemasonry is a spiritually founded fraternal order, whose traditional foundation is faith in God, the Great Architect of the Universe.

  • It is based on the Ancient Obligations and the Landmarks of the Brotherhood, especially the absolute respect for traditions essential to the regulations of its jurisdiction.

  • It is an order that may be joined only by free and worthy men, committed to the ideal of peace, love, and brotherhood.

  • It strives to improve all of humanity through the moral perfection of its members.

  • It obliges its members to precisely and strictly observe the rites and symbols as a path to understanding.

  • It requires respect for opinions and beliefs and forbids political or religious disputes, thus creating a permanent center of fraternal unity.

  • Members take their obligations by swearing upon the Book of the Holy Law, giving the oath a solemn and sacred character necessary for its observance.

  • Freemasons gather in Lodges, apart from worldly life, where the Three Great Lights are always displayed:

    The Book of the Holy Law

    The Square

    The Compasses

    Work is carried out in accordance with the ritual, diligently and meticulously, following the Constitution and General Regulations.

  • Only adult men of impeccable reputation, honorable, faithful, and temperate, and capable of recognizing the limits of man and the infinite power of the eternal, are admitted.

  • In the Lodges, Freemasons encourage love for the Homeland, obedience to the Law, and respect for competent authorities. Work is regarded as man's primary duty and is honored in all its forms.

  • By their dignified and exemplary conduct, Freemasons contribute to the enhancement of the Order's reputation while respecting the secrecy of Freemasonry.

  • Freemasons have the duty of brotherly assistance and protection toward one another, to be rendered with honor, even at the cost of life. They are trained in the art of calmness and composure in all circumstances, which is essential for the perfection of self-mastery.
